Jalen T. Smith

Jalen T. Smith joins KIPP Philosophers Academy with over 11 years of experience in education and a clear belief that every child deserves to attend a school that is safe, joyful, and academically strong. He is deeply committed to building school communities where students are challenged to think critically, supported to grow confidently, and surrounded by adults who believe in their unlimited potential.

Most recently, Jalen served as a Principal-in-Residence with KIPP Texas Public Schools at KIPP Nexus Middle School in Houston, Texas, where he focused on strengthening instructional systems, school culture, and leadership development. He brings experience working in high-needs school communities and a steady commitment to build schools rooted in consistency and trust. During his leadership tenure, the school saw double-digit academic growth and a significant reduction in discipline referrals, reflecting a stronger culture of consistency and high expectations.

Jalen earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Morehouse College and holds a Master's in Organizational Leadership of Public Schools from the Summer Principals Academy at Teachers College, Columbia University. He believes that strong schools are built through partnership - with families, students, and staff working together toward a shared vision of excellence. His leadership is grounded in structure, care, accountability, and the belief that when expectations are clear and relationships are strong, students thrive.

Originally from Decatur, Alabama, Jalen is a proud first-generation college graduate, product of public schools, son of two hardworking parents, twin and older brother, uncle of five, and member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He values family, mentorship, and service, and brings that same spirit into his leadership. Outside of school, he enjoys reading, traveling, fitness, church and community involvement, trying new restaurants, and exploring new adventures. Jalen is honored to serve the students and families of KIPP Philosophers Academy and is excited to work alongside the community to build a school where every student feels safe, valued, and prepared for a bright future.
