Fifteen students in the Expanded Learning (after-school) program at KIPP Philosophers Academy recently reached an exciting milestone — becoming published authors.
In Mrs. Jones’ 6th-grade expanded learning class, students spent time reflecting on their school year and channeling their creativity into a special project: writing and illustrating their own book titled “6th Grade Year at KIPP Philosophers Academy.” Each student contributed a personal entry about their experiences in 6th grade, paired with an original illustration that brought their story to life.
The book was published through the Studentreasures Student Book Project, a program that helps young writers turn their work into professionally bound books, giving students the opportunity to see themselves as real authors.

To celebrate the accomplishment, Mrs. Jones hosted a book release party where students bravely read their entries aloud in front of classmates and proud family members. The room was filled with excitement as students shared their reflections, creativity, and voices.
Moments like these highlight the power of expanded learning opportunities. Programs like the one at KIPP Philosophers Academy give students space to explore their interests, build confidence, and discover new talents beyond the classroom.
For these 15 young authors, the project was more than just a class assignment. It was a chance to tell their stories, celebrate their experiences, and hold a book in their hands that they created themselves.
