We’re proud to celebrate one of our incredible KIPP Raíces Academy and KIPP Sol Academy alumna, Leilani Gutierrez, who has been selected as a winner of LEE’s first-ever Change Challenge Scholarship!
This national recognition honors Leilani’s bold vision and unwavering commitment to her community. Her work is a beautiful reminder of what’s possible when young leaders are nurtured, supported, and empowered to turn their lived experiences into meaningful change.
A Vision Rooted in Belonging and Identity
Leilani’s submission was both powerful and deeply personal — a reflection on belonging, identity, and what it means to build communities where every individual feels seen and valued. She reminds us that leadership is grounded in heart, courage, and the small actions that inspire others to rise with you.
Leilani shared, “I realized I could be someone others look up to. Leadership is about creating impact through small, meaningful actions. Our stories deserve to be recognized as an essential part of what makes LA vibrant and powerful. Our generation needs to uplift and support one another.”
Her Project: Prepared and Protected Families
Leilani’s winning project addresses a critical need faced by undocumented families in East LA who often lack emergency plans to protect their children, documents, and finances in the event of detention or deportation. Her proposed solution, Plan for Tomorrow, includes bilingual preparedness kits, caregiver forms, emergency contacts, and “encounter scripts” for children, paired with free community workshops.
What makes her idea especially impactful is its community-led model, training local residents and young adults as peer educators to build trust and create a sustainable network of family protection advocates.
This opportunity was introduced to Leilani through KIPP Forward, a testament to how our counselors continue opening doors for students long after middle school — one of the many reasons families continue to #ChooseKIPP.
