KIPP Compton Upper School Launches Mentorship Program with Alpha Phi Alpha

KIPP Compton Upper School is proud to launch a new male scholar mentorship program in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Zeta Lambda Chapter.

This year, 12 KIPP scholars are participating in the nationally recognized Go to High School, Go to College initiative—a program designed to inspire young men to excel academically, lead confidently, and see college as an achievable next step.

Created by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Go to High School, Go to College emphasizes the importance of completing high school and pursuing higher education as a road to advancement. Through mentorship, monthly workshops, and community engagement, students gain the tools, guidance, and encouragement needed to thrive in school and beyond.

For Ms. Townsend, KIPP Compton Upper School’s Community Schools Manager, who brought this partnership to campus, this work is deeply personal:

“Bringing the Go to High School, Go to College partnership to KIPP Compton was an act of urgency and love. Through observation and our needs assessments, it was clear that our boys were growing up in a space with very little male presence, and our families named mentorship as a priority. I knew from lived experience that Alpha Phi Alpha’s legacy of service, scholarship, and brotherhood would meet that need with excellence. Programs like this are not optional; they are essential. They disrupt cycles, plant vision early, and place Black and Brown boys in front of men who lead with purpose. This is just the beginning of opportunity, of guidance, and of building the future our scholars deserve.”

This partnership matters deeply. Because when students connect with positive role models and receive real-world support, they begin to envision new possibilities. Our scholars are developing stronger academic habits, discovering leadership skills, and building the confidence to pursue ambitious futures.

Meetings run monthly from November through June, providing consistent, meaningful touchpoints that support both academic and personal growth. Programs like this mentorship partnership are just one of the many reasons families #ChooseKIPP, where students are supported, challenged, and surrounded by mentors who believe in their potential.
