On August 6, more than 1,400 KIPP SoCal team members gathered at the Pasadena Convention Center for Start Strong, our annual regional professional development day.
This year’s event was filled with energy, inspiration, and a shared commitment to making the 2025-26 school year our best yet.
The day began with an inspiring welcome message from KIPP LA Prep alumna Bryanna Davila, who reflected on her KIPP journey and the lasting impact our educators have on students long after graduation. Her words set a powerful tone for the day, reminding us why we do this work.
Immediately following, the KIPP LA Prep cheer and dance team brought the crowd to its feet with a spirited performance that radiated school pride and kicked the energy into high gear.
KIPP SoCal CEO Angella Martinez served as MC, sharing our 2024-25 results and officially launching the 2025-26 school year. Her message underscored the importance of continued growth and innovation while celebrating the dedication of every KIPP team member.
One of the day’s most spirited moments was the “Swag Off”, where schools showed off their unique gear and spirit wear. A panel of KIPP alumni—now KIPP team members—served as judges, and in the end, KIPP Academy of Opportunity took home the title of Swag Champion.
A highlight of the morning was a special panel discussion featuring:
- Mia Walker, School Leader, KIPP Empower Academy
- Thomas Marren, Educator, KIPP Empower Academy
- Lili Alarid, School Leader, KIPP Promesa Prep
- Dr. Joanne Espejo, Educator, KIPP Promesa Prep
The panel explored the strategies that have fueled two consecutive years of year-over-year growth in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math at their schools, offering insights and inspiration for the year ahead.
In the afternoon, the region broke out into specialized sessions tailored to each team: teachers, expanded learning, student services, community schools, school success teams, and operations. These sessions provided targeted professional development, shared best practices, and space for collaboration.
Start Strong was a powerful reminder of our collective mission and the strength of our KIPP SoCal community. With renewed energy, shared strategies, and the unwavering belief in our students’ potential, we are ready to make the 2025-26 school year unforgettable.
