May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month — a time for all of us to expand our cultural understanding, challenge stereotypes, and recognize AAPI communities' vital contributions to our shared American story. Through meaningful engagement with AAPI cultures, histories, and current experiences, we demonstrate to our students that we value diversity in all its forms and are committed to learning beyond our own lived experiences.
This month, we encourage all schools to create age-appropriate activities and learning experiences that:
- Spotlight the diverse cultures, achievements, and histories of AAPI communities
- Elevate AAPI voices and stories within your curriculum
- Connect students with AAPI authors, historical figures, scientists, artists, and changemakers
- Engage families and community members in sharing cultural traditions and perspectives
- Create space for discussion around identity, belonging, and the power of community
To help support your planning this month, we invite you to review the KIPP SoCal AAPI Toolkit and the Library of Congress AAPI Heritage Month Resources. These materials are designed to help you foster inclusive learning environments where all students thrive.
How will you join us in celebrating the rich legacies and vibrant voices of AAPI communities? Share your lessons, stories, and reflections with us on social media by tagging @kippsocal.
