On August 4, we celebrated a huge milestone — the groundbreaking for KIPP Ignite Academy's future home on 81st Street in South Los Angeles' Florence-Firestone neighborhood!

The ceremony featured inspiring remarks from KIPP Ignite School Leader Danielle Johnson and a beautiful community-building project, allowing attendees to design personalized tiles for the new campus.

Event attendees included KIPP Ignite families, team members, and community champions, including LAUSD Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin, LAUSD Board District 7 Chief of Staff Dr. Didi Watts, and Watts of Power Foundation CEO Dr. Peter Watts.

Nothing but smiles at the KIPP Ignite groundbreaking ceremony.

During the event, one of our talented KIPPsters drew a picture of the future building on his tile. Ian, one of the project's designers from Berliner Architects, immediately stopped to talk with the aspiring architect about all things design.

Berliner Architects is also responsible for designing the bright and inviting KIPP Innovation and KIPP Compton Lower School campuses.

Touching moments like these ignite the fire in our hearts and we look forward to the day our KIPPsters become the architects, engineers, and educators who open future KIPP schools.

KIPPsters showed off their creativity by creating personalized tiles for the new campus.

Founded in 2015, KIPP Ignite has been operating its TK-4 campus on split sites for years in the Florence-Firestone/Watts neighborhoods.

In our journey to KIPP Ignite's permanent home, many teammates, families, and students have kept going in challenging circumstances, holding on to the belief that one day, we'd see the result our students deserve — a beautiful campus.

Now that construction on KIPP Ignite's permanent home has officially started, we can't wait for our Ignite KIPPsters and families to finally have the campus they've been waiting to occupy for so many years.
