Alumni Spotlight: Founding Goldberg Scholar Graduates from UCLA

In celebration of the founding class of Goldberg scholars graduating college, we caught up with our KIPP LA Prep alumna and first-generation college graduate, Metztli Garcia! Born and raised in East Los Angeles in a systemically under-resourced community, she continues to speak on the issues that her community faces in efforts to create the change she wants to see in both the workforce and in higher education! We learned about her recent college experience and what’s next as she moves on to the next chapter of her life.

"The Goldberg Program allowed me to focus on college a lot more, like what career I want to pursue and not [worry and question] how I'm going to fund it," said Garcia. As a Dave Goldberg Scholar, she received financial support and mentorship throughout her college years. This annual scholarship is focused on assisting a new generation of diverse alumni to become the leaders of tomorrow!

A leader, indeed! Garcia has been recognized by former United States Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis and by the Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti for displaying excellence and leadership through her community efforts. She has also been featured in the Museum of Latin American Art, ABC7, and People Magazine.

Overall, Garcia hopes to address the countless policy challenges facing communities of color through her learned research, advocacy, and mobilization!
