Honoring Juneteenth

Honoring Juneteenth

This Friday, June 19th, marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, a symbolic day that not only commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States, but also signifies Black liberation and emphasizes education and achievement. In reflection, we regret that in the past we have not consistently stood with and celebrated our Black communities in the observance of this day. As of this year and moving forward, KIPP SoCal Public Schools will honor a day of action on Juneteenth by closing — for commemoration, education, and connection. However you decide to take action, please know that KIPP SoCal joins you in actively working to dismantle systems of oppression in our continued fight for racial justice.

In support of our Black communities, we take a stand with all those fighting for justice and systemic racism in our communities, our policing systems, and in our schools. This week, at KIPP SoCal we launched an online action-oriented portal called Together for Justice. The site includes a continuously updated “Resources for Change” section, with information on how to get informed about systemic racism and anti-racism in America; take action to encourage and support reform; and engage with organizations on the front lines of social justice. There is also an ongoing “In Solidarity” feature highlighting different organizations, anti-racism resources, and amplifying the KIPP team and family voices.

We will continue to reflect, evaluate, and evolve, in order to create a work and learning space where all are welcomed and embraced at KIPP SoCal. Let's begin to better understand racism as a system into which we have all been socialized, a construct that not one of us has escaped. Let’s put our energy into self awareness, continuing education, relationship building, and actual anti-racist practice. Let's focus on what matters — today, tomorrow, and always — and create the world we want for ourselves and for our children.

Join us on this side of humanity, and take steps towards justice.
