About KIPP LA Prep

Knowledge Is Power

With the support of the local neighborhood council and a strong group of founding parents, KIPP Los Angeles College Preparatory School (KIPP LA Prep) was established with the aim of educating underserved students by providing a rigorous academic program, with a strong emphasis on the core subjects of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies.

While KIPP LA Prep's students typically enroll performing two to three years below grade level, they make dramatic gains across all subjects during their middle school years. In 2011-12, KIPP LA Prep's eighth graders outscored the district by 44 percent in English language arts, 68 percent in math, and 52 percent in history. One hundred percent of KIPP LA Prep's eighth graders were proficient or advanced in science and 94 percent scored at that level in math as measured by the California Standards Tests (CST). Currently, KIPP LA Prep educates nearly 500 students in grades five through eight. Ninety-eight percent of our students are Latinx and 90 percent of our students qualify for the federal free and reduced-price lunch program.

Our History

KIPP LA Prep opened in summer 2003 under the leadership of founder John Lee, in the community of Lincoln Heights in northeast Los Angeles. KIPP LA Prep moved to a new home in Boyle Heights in 2009.
