KIPP SoCal Distance Learning
As we prepare to begin the new school year with 100% Distance Learning, our mission to create joyful, academically excellent schools that prepare students with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose is more important than ever.
And while we know that there is simply no substitute for in-person learning, we believe that through a comprehensive Distance Learning Program, we can meet the socio-emotional and learning needs of our students, the priorities and most pressing needs of our families, and leverage the collective strength of our Team & Family to successfully rise to this challenge.
Foundational Priorities
Throughout our Distance Learning Program this Spring, we monitored our students’ learning progress, listened to the voices of our teachers and school leaders, our school communities, and the input from our families, and have learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to effectively support our students through Distance Learning. Our four fundamental principles below will guide our Distance Learning Program:
-
Safety First
-
Joyful & Connected
-
Academically Excellent
-
Flexible & Responsive
In consideration of all that we have learned, and in alignment with the new State guidelines for Distance Learning, we will be deeply student and community centered in our approach to Distance Learning. The information below outlines the common building blocks across all schools related to teaching, learning, and how we envision continuing to foster important connections with our students and families as we navigate this new world together.

Live Interactive Learning
Live online lessons will focus on grade level learning priorities, small groups for strategic lessons, opportunities for class discussion, and for teachers to give students real-time feedback during the lesson. Your child will have access to live online lessons each day of the week, with the majority happening Tuesday-Friday. Each school will set their own live online lesson time.
Flexible Independent Learning
Our daily suggested schedules ensure that students can complete all independent work in their own time, yet still be held accountable for the completion of these core assignments (i.e. pre-recorded lessons, packets, online learning platforms, and reading), in order to maximize learning and allow families flexibility to structure time in a way that works best for them.

Relationship Building
We are committed to continuing to foster a sense of belonging and connection, grounded in restorative practices and relationship development. These practices include daily morning meetings, advisory groups, bi-weekly teacher/student check-ins, daily open office hours with teachers, school community ‘virtual’ events & celebrations, virtual home visits at the beginning of the school year, parent & guardian surveys to assess the family and student school experience, & weekly communication through ParentSquare.

Accountability & Progress
We will take attendance, monitor assignment completion and communicate about students’ progress in a more formalized manner.

Consistent Schedule
We will anchor teaching and learning within consistent daily and weekly schedules, while providing flexibility for families to balance the challenges of learning from home. Each school will share their grade-level specific schedules before the first day of school that will include blocks of time for Live Online Lessons, suggestions for Independent Work, breaks for Play & Meals, and Office Hours/Teacher-Student Check-ins or Intervention Groups. Any questions/concerns about your child’s schedule, please contact your schools’ administrator.
