School Leader, KIPP Philosophers Academy
Phyllis Carrillo is currently the School Leader at KIPP Philosophers Academy in South Los Angeles. Prior to joining KIPP, she was a 2008 Teach for America corps member in Baltimore, Maryland. She taught for two years at her placement school in South Baltimore as a fifth grade self-contained teacher. After her two-year commitment to Teach for America, she joined the KIPP team and family at KIPP Ujima Village Academy in Baltimore, Maryland where she spent two wonderful years as the fifth grade language arts teacher. In 2012, she made the transition back to California to be a founding teacher at KIPP Philosophers Academy. Ms. Carrillo was named a Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching award winner. After 3 years teaching at Philosophers, she transitioned onto the leadership team as a Dean and then the Assistant School Leader. She earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies from San Diego State University and an M.A.T. in Elementary Education at Johns Hopkins University.
