Shannon Leonard

Director of Teaching and Learning

Shannon Leonard is the Director of Teaching and Learning at KIPP LA Public Schools. In this role, in which he is entering his third year, Shannon collaborates with Angella Martinez and his Associate Director of Teaching and Learning, Elizabeth Petrey, in developing a vision for instructional excellence rooted in research-based best practices, and actualizing the vision through training, developing, and collaborating with school leaders and teachers. Shannon was the founding principal of Camino Nuevo Sandra Cisneros, a bilingual K-8 school in Echo Park, Los Angeles. He served in that role from 2011-2016. Prior, Shannon, a TFA Los Angeles ‘01 alum, was an elementary school teacher in South Los Angeles and Watts from 2001-2007, taught first grade at the Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China in 2007-2008, was Amber Young Medina’s Instructional Support Director at KIPP Raices Academy during its founding year in 2008-2009, and taught fourth grade at Camino Nuevo Burlington in MacArthur Park from 2009-2011. Shannon holds a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from Loyola Marymount University and a Master of Arts in Education from UCLA, where he received his principal’s credential as part of the Principal Leadership Institute. Shannon received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the College of William and Mary.
